UK: Queen's birthday celebrations to end with street party

LONDON, BdChronicle:

Queen Elizabeth II's birthday celebrations are ending with a massive street party on the road leading to Buckingham Palace, culminating a weekend of official events in Britain marking her 90th birthday.

Some 10,000 people will gather on The Mall to eat a picnic lunch to celebrate her work with some 600 charities. Participants each get a little hamper with best-of-British products.

The monarch will attend to watch a carnival-style procession.

The celebration on Sunday has not been without controversy. Tickets for the event cost 150 pounds ($214) each — a figure criticized by many as being too expensive.

Charities were asked to pay for the passes themselves, but were allowed to raise money with 40 percent of their tickets.

The non-profit event was organized by the queen's grandson, Peter Phillips.
