BNP’s rejuvenation drive ‘fails as committees remain unannounced ‘

Dhaka, BdChronicle:

They said the unusual delay in announcing the committees is caused by BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s indecision and also her differences of opinion with her exiled son Tarique Rahman.

A leader close to Khaleda said she is not declaring the committees for some strategic reasons. “The BNP chief has given some senior leaders to work out a roadmap for a fresh anti-government movement after Ramadan. So, she’ll announce the committees just before launching the agitation so that the new leaders can take part in it with fresh vigor,” he said wishing anonymity.

According to him, Khaleda Zia is also in indecision about who should be retained and who should be dropped from the existing committee, and induction of new faces in the policymaking body of the party. “She’s in confusion about the role of some leaders as she has got negative information about them, putting her in a dilemma over keeping or dropping them.”

Party senior leaders said a delay in forming the committees is causing apathy and frustration among the leaders and activists.

They hoped that their chairperson will announce the committees towards the end of Ramadan as an ‘eid gift’ for the leaders.

At its national council held in the city, BNP councillors endorsed Khaleda Zia as party chairperson and her son Tarique Rahman as senior vice chairman.

They also entrusted Khaleda with the responsibility to constitute the party central executive committee and the national stranding committee.

But, she only unveiled the names for 40 posts, including that for secretary-general, senior joint secretary-general, treasurer, joint secretaries general, organising secretaries and assistant organising secretaries.

“It’s unfortunate that our party couldn’t yet announce its standing committee and full-fledged national executive committee after a so nice and successful council. It’s surely casting a negative impact on the party,” said BNP standing committee member Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman.

“There were huge enthusiasms among the party men over the council as they had hoped the party would rebound through reconstituting of its executive and standing committees with competent, dedicated and talented leaders. But, now their spirit is fading away due to unnecessary delay in making the committees.”

“I think our chairperson is aware of everything and she’ll take a quick decision about it. The party is now facing many challenges. So, now we should complete our party revamping process shortly and come up with different programmes on public issues to make the party vibrant,” he added.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said it is not an easy task to form the full-fledged executive and standing committees of a big party like BNP.

He said Khaleda is likely to announce the committees before Eid-ul-Fitr.

BNP chairperson’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu said it could be better had the committees been formed at the council or soon after the event.” It was expectation of the party leaders and activists that they would get new committees and new posts and new leaders. As it is yet to happen completely, obviously they are unhappy.”

Dudu, however, said Khaleda is discussing with party senior leaders about completing the process soon. “I hope she’ll unveil the full-fledged committee at the end of Ramadan as an eid gift for leaders.”
