Suspected peddler killed, one injured in ‘gunfights’
A suspected drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ allegedly with a rival group at Boluhar-Dakattola, Kotchandpur, Jhenaidah early Sunday and another suspect was arrested after he was injured in a separate ‘gunfight’ at Durgapur, Aditmari, Lalmonirhat Sunday afternoon, said the police.
The police told New Age that they also recovered the body of an alleged ‘drug peddler’ from the Lata River near the Lata Bazar, Mehendiganj, Barishal on Sunday morning, a day after he had jumped into the river to escape from the chase by the police.
But relatives told New Age that the young victim was taking preparations to go to the Philippines in a week to work.
But the police claimed he was a drug peddler.
The latest casualties increased the death toll to 241 in the ongoing nationwide anti-drug drive since May 15.
The deceased in Jhenaidah, Md Selim, 42, son of Nur Islam of Kashipur, Kotchandpur, Jhenaidah, was wanted in five cases, four of them related to narcotic offences, said Kotchandpur police station officer-in-charge said Biplab Kumar Saha.
He claimed that Selim was killed in ‘gunfight with a rival group at Boluhar-Dakattola area at about 2:00am.
Police said that they seized a shooter gun, two bullets, 40 bottles of Phensedyl, 300 Yaba tablets and a private car from the spot.
New Age correspondent in Barishal, quoting police, reported that the police recovered the body of a suspected drug peddler, Shafikur Rahman Tuhin, 35, son of Ahsanullah khan of Harinathpur, Hijla, Barishal, from the Lata River on Sunday morning.
Kazirhat police station officer-in-charge Harun-ur-Rashid said that police conducted an anti-drug drive on Saturday when a group of peddlers were gambling in a garden near the Lata Bazaar at about 1:00pm on Saturday.
Sensing the presence of police, the suspected peddlers fled, but Shafikul Islam Tuhinn jumped into the river to escape arrest, the OC claimed.
His paternal uncle Muhammad Latif Khan, who is chairman of Harinathpur union parishad under Hizla upazila, said that Tuhin was not a drug paddler.
‘He was taking the preparations to fly to the Philippines in a week,’ he said.
Our Correspondent in Lalmonirhat, quoting Aditmari Police Station OC Masud Rana, reported that the police arrested a bullet-injured drug peddler, Mizanur Rahaman, 44, of Gubdha village, Aditmari, Lalmonirhat, after a gunfight at Durgapur on Sunday evening.
OC Masud said that Mizan was wanted in seven drug related cases and they seized 200 bottles of Phensedyl from the spot.
In the capital, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested 44 suspected drug addicts and peddlers from different places in the capital in 24 hours ending Sunday 6:00am and seized 1,666Yaba tablets, 748 grams of heroin and 765 grams of hemp from their possession, DMP officials said.
