Fizz, Shakib daunt Lankan 2nd innings 268/8 at stumps on day four
Bangladesh’s cutter Master Mustafizur Rahman and experienced all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan shared the six-wicket equally to squeeze Sri Lanka’s score 268/8 at stumps in the 2nd innings on day four of the 2nd and last Test of the Joy Bangla Cup series at P Sara Oval, Colombo on Saturday.
Dilruwan Perera 26* and Suranga Lakmal 16* were at the crease in the 9th wicket with their unbeaten partnership of 30 in 8.4 overs when the bails were drawn or the day.
Sri Lanka started the day from behind 75 runs and now at stumps with 139-run lead with two wickets in hand, sharply spurred by the overnight opener Dimuth Karunaratne’s 5th Test century of 126 off 244 balls, including 10 boundaries and one over boundary.
Besides, his individual score, Karunaratne flourished in the 2nd stand with Kusal Mendis for a partnership figure of 86 in 30.5 overs that was departed by Mustafiz at 143/2 in 45 overs.
Mustafiz took his 1st one in the innings departing Mendis, was caught by keeper Mushfiqur Rahim, from the 2nd pair which started from 1/57 in 14.1 overs.
Shakib Al Hasan removed Karunaratne, was caught by Soumya Sarkar, from the crease at 217/7 in 81.3 overs after tea.
Having 338 runs in the first innings, the host side resumed the innings with overnight collection of 54/0 in 13 overs and played 87 overs more in the full three sessions on the day to add 214 runs more with their previous collection at the cost of eight wickets.
Mehedi Hasan Miraz made the first break through for Bangladesh in the innings as he bowled out Upul Tharanga (26 off 40b; 3x4) departing the overnight opening pair at 57/1 in 14.1 overs.
The host side collected sound figure of 137/1 in 43.0 overs at lunch, but Mustafiz and Shakib shocked the Lankan batting castle capturing the next five wickets -- Kusal Mendis (36 off 91b; 2x4), Dinesh Chandimal (5), Asela Gunaratne (7), Dhananjaya de Silva (0) and Niroshan Dickwella (5) -- at tea when scoreboard showing 199/6 in 69 overs.
Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim performed well behind the stumps as he caught four wickets on the day.
Sri Lanka skipper Rangana Herath was out as the day’s last wicket as he was trapped lbw by spinner Taijul Islam at 238/8 in 91.2 overs.
Mustafizur and Shakib captured three wickets each for 52 and 61 runs. Taijul and Miraz took one wicket each for 31 and 67 runs.
