‘Innovation Hub’ to be set up at every university

The government has taken an initiative to establish an ‘Innovation Hub’ at every university under the Access to Information (a2i) programme of the Prime Minister’s Office to encourage students to develop new ideas for resolving different problems.     

An executive committee comprising of a focal person, advisers and some mentors will supervise every hub.

The information was revealed at a ‘Vice-chancellors’ Conference’ organised by the a2i programme at the International Mother Language Institute in the capital on Tuesday. 

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid spoke at the programme as the chief guest through a teleconference while University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan was present as a special guest.

Nahid underscored the need for focusing on research more at all higher education-level institutions to exercise knowledge.  

He called for creating a technology-based education system coming out of the traditional method of higher education to keep pace with the world. 

The minister also urged the university teachers to inspire the students to do more research. 

Addressing the programme, Dhaka University (DU) Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman emphasised on identification of problem for any innovation.

He also stressed the need for a building a bridge between the universities and different industries for better use of the innovated ideas.

The UGC Chairman put emphasis on research activities at every university.

Vice-chancellors and representatives of different private and public universities of the country took part in the programme.

Mentioning that priority should be given to research for new innovations in the country, the teachers said the government funds allocated for research work at universities is not sufficient, calling for increasing the fund to inspire the students more.

Secondary and Higher Secondary Division Secretary Sohrab Hossain and a2i Project Manager Anir Chowdhury, among others, spoke at the function.
