6 more cases filed against Mahmudur Rahman
Six more cases have been filed in as many districts against acting editor of the Daily Amar Desh Mahmudur Rahman for his alleged derogatory remarks about Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty, and Bangabandhu and his family.
In Comilla, Advocate Md Ziaul Hasan Chowdhury Shohag, former vice-president of district unit Bangladesh Chhatra League, filed a Tk 1,000-crore defamation case with the Comilla Judicial Magistrate Court-1 on Tuesday.
Justice Md Mostain Billah ordered the officer-in-charge of Comilla Detective Branch (DB) to investigate the allegation.
In Narail, a Tk 1,000-crore defamation case was filed against the vernacular daily editor and BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed and president of Bangladesh Democratic Council MA Halim on Tuesday.
Former district BCL president Mostafa Kamal filed the case with a court here.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Jahidul Azad ordered the OC of Sadar Police Station to accept the allegation as case.
In Chapainawabganj, district Jubo Mohila League president Advocate Yeasmin Sultana Ruma filed a defamation case with Senior Judicial Magistrate Court on Tuesday.
In Tangail, General Secretary of district Awami League Saifuzzaman Sohel on Tuesday filed yet another defamation case with the Sadar Judicial Magistrate Court.
In Sunamganj, Senior Joint Convener of district BCL filed a complaint against Mahmudur Rahman under the ICT Act with Sunamganj Sadar Model Police Station on Tuesday.
In Satkhira, Additional Public Prosecutor of Satkhira Judge Court Azharul Islam filed a case on Monday night under the ICT Act.
According to the case statements, Mahmudur Rahman at a programme at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital on December 1 claimed that Bangladesh is not an independent country as it has no sovereignty although it has land and population.
“Bangladesh is now ‘a colony of India’. According to the political science, Bangladesh can’t be considered as a state. Sheikh Mujib had killed country's democracy and independence of mass media and buried it,” he had said, according to the statement.
He also demanded that the mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman should not be on the premise of the Jatiya Press Club and claimed that the current government is illegal.
In the last several days, a number of defamation cases were filed against the Amar Desh acting editor across the country.
